Anytime I meet an adult that tells me an old story about fishing with their parents, its melts my heart. I think most of the things me and Anna do, are to make memories for our children that will last a lifetime with them. I knew today when Zoe sat there creekside on a rock looking up to the sky smiling, I had succeeded this time.
We had fished a few pools with a lot of rushing water, and Zoe hadn’t had much luck. I could see that she was missing fish, so I was hoping for a fish for her, but not really thinking it was going to happen. When we came to a long, shallow, still pool, I figured it’d be too hard for her to fish. But, she insisted, and snuck up to the pool on her hands and knees. Three casts in, she was ready to give up and move upstream, just as her fly swung through the current, WHAM! “Dad, I got one, its a fish! It’s happening!” She hauled it in, wet her hands and looked at it, more shocked than any other emotion. She was maybe even more shocked than the fish was, they both breathed equally as heavy.
I was most happy that we were able to get some photos quickly and have a really great release. The fish sat idle in the water for only about 10 seconds before it darted off. Almost immediately it dropped back into its slot and was facing upstream ready to feed again.
In between helping Zoe, I was able to get a few casts in as well…
